Non-Fans and the Superbowl

Today I think I figured out what it must be like to be a non-Christian on Christmas. I was running an errand this afternoon, and I decided to make a “quick” stop at the grocery store to pick up some soda for Husband. I walked into the store, and I felt like I entered an alternate universe. The store was packed with people. An announcement was blaring over the loudspeaker about various specials. Store displays were overflowing with chips, soda, and beer. My senses were immediately on overload, and it took me all of one second to realize what was going on: Superbowl Sunday. I thought how naïve (stupid, actually) it was for me to think I could make a “quick” trip to the grocery store on the biggest sports day of the year. I wished I could somehow display my “non-fan” status, which would maybe exempt me from the chaos in the store. While others are talking about which team will outscore the other, I’m preoccupied only with trying to score myself a decent spot in line. The lines, however, moved quickly. I noticed that the man in front of me purchased Velveeta cheese, salsa, and a bag of chips. Now that’s a part of this holiday that I might be able to celebrate. Husband and I will still probably watch the Superbowl tonight. But I won’t lie – I’ll be paying closer attention to the commercials than the game.

Hahaha! Your fast line made me laugh out loud. That's sooo me. I spent the day at the movies and running. Oh wellz!!

Last year I was far more interested cause a NY team was playing. This year I didn't even know who was playing!

I think that is a perfect way to describe it! So many people are hyped about superbowl and we are just like "ehhh."

I just stumbled across your blog and wanted to tell you I really enjoyed reading your posts. My husband and I always gleefully go out to eat and to the bookstore on superbowl Sunday... its like going someplace on a Thursday morning! We get to be nearly the only people there.

I'm with you! I've been in the office all night paying bills, blogging, perusing the internet....I can hear the game, but have not a clue as to what's going on.

I'm not a fan, but the game's on because hubs digs it.

Earlier in the week, we were talking and the subject of our conversation was the shortage of wings. My question to him was something about chickens being born without or simply not as many chickens being hatched. He stared at me like my third eye was protruding again and told me no, it's because of the superbowl. Ohhhhh...yeah that. I had beef stew in ye olde crock pot on our menu for today. Lucky us, huh?

I DO enjoy a Sunday evening with chips and queso... or light beer and Blue Bell, which mine did tonight.

That is a girl's version of Super Bowl Sunday for you!

Our grocery store was packed, too, but the laundry room and gym were completely empty. Sometimes being a non-fan pays off! : )

Oh Tootie, that just made me LOL. Yep. It's even more difficult when you live where the Super Bowl is. We've heard nothing but Super Bowl for at least two weeks.

I hibernated all day for fear of road closures and traffic. I watched half time, I only knew it was half time because I could see and hear the fireworks from Raymond James Stadium. :D

PS I did make dip, Velveeta, two cans of Hormel chili and a jar of salsa in a crockpot.

I watch one game per year: The Super Bowl.

and I never go to the store on Christmas Eve or Super Bowl Sunday.

Live and learn - ha ha ha

BTW, I gave you an award. See?

I was the same way--watched the game but really only focused on the commericals! That's a funny analogy about Christmas.

haha! I took the opportunity to go to the commissary while everyone was home watching the super bowl. It was GREAT! There was plenty of food (except for chips & salsa) and i didn't even have to dodge bratty kids OR wait in line =)

Same here, kind of breezed in and out of the family room all night, catching bits and pieces of the game, commercials, halftime. It's a nice escape for a couple hours!

I agree, the game is not all that interesting, and good thing I feel that way because ever since we've had kids I spend the entire Superbowl party chasing them around to make sure they don't destroy someone else's house, so I don't see any of the game! Thanks for stopping by my blog!
