Big Weekend Plans

We have a set date tonight with Cheez-it snacks, Twizzlers, and a movie. (The movie is Megamind, which we’ve already seen but loved.) Happy Weekend!

Subtitles

This weekend, Husband and I watched our first subtitled movie together. I’m embarrassed to say that the movie was actually in English. It was the movie Inception, which Husband had been dying to see.
After about 15 minutes of us struggling to figure out what was going on (“Wait, what did he say?”), Husband paused the movie and change the settings to display English subtitles. Husband laughed and said that maybe he is becoming an old man. I must be becoming an old woman because I thought the subtitle idea was genius.
I’ve always said that I want to grow old with Husband. I just didn’t realize that the “older” part would be here sooner than we thought.
P.S. Even with the subtitles (although they helped quite a bit), I nearly gave up on trying to figure out what was going on. I’m not usually a big fan of science fiction anyway, but I will admit that the movie was interesting.

Megamind

This past weekend Husband and I saw the movie Megamind. I wasn’t sure how it was going to be, but I was pleasantly surprised that:
1) Our outdated movie theater is finally offering movies, including this one, in 3D.
2) The movie was hilarious!
We laughed so much throughout the movie. I’d go as far to say that it’s one of the funniest movies, animated or otherwise, that we’ve seen in a while.
The only unpleasant thing about the movie was the family behind us, where every single one of them (including the baby!) coughed loudly throughout the movie and sometimes in unison. (If I had had any cough drops or hard candy in my purse, I would have pushed them on this can’t-stop-coughing family. Also, I vigorously washed my hands after the movie in irrational hopes that it might keep me from getting sick.)
But coughing aside, it was a great movie.

Top Gun 2?

Husband recently told me that he heard there’s going to be a sequel to Top Gun. The more details he told me he heard, the more far-fetched it sounded, and I didn’t believe him. He assured me he wasn’t joking.
Well, I checked the internet, and it turns out that there really is a sequel in the works.
Even though the movie is really nothing like real military life, it’s a classic that we love anyway. We have not one, but two copies of it, since we each had our own copy before we got married. (Although I think that at some point we might have given one away.)
And yes, we like to quote some of the memorable lines:
- “You don’t have time to think up there. If you think, you’re dead.”
- “Yeeha, Jester’s dead!”
- “Talk to me, Goose.” [True fact: Sometimes when one of Husband’s pilot friends calls, he answers the phone like that as a joke.]
And, of course:
- “I feel the need…the need for speed.”
Will the sequel (if it gets made) be as good as the original? Probably not.
Will we still see the movie anyway? Definitely yes.

The Weekend of Eat, Pray, Love

It was perfect timing this weekend. Husband’s military trip out of town coincided with the release of the biggest chick flick of the year: Eat, Pray, Love.
Husband doesn’t know it, but he dodged a bullet. That is, a bullet that is 2-hours long about a woman’s journey to find herself. I figured that if I was going to see the movie, this was the ideal time.
The movie did not disappoint. I read the book a while ago, and I liked it. But, I have to say that I really, really liked the movie. Julia Roberts seemed to make the main character a little softer and more relatable. That’s not to mention that for 2 hours I feasted on colorful, beautiful eye candy of 3 exotic places around the world.
So, if you happen to like 1) Julia Roberts, 2) traveling, 3) eating, and/or 4) chick flicks, you will enjoy this movie. (I feel the need to clarify that though it was a chick flick, I definitely wouldn’t classify it as a romantic comedy, although it certainly did have some moments of romance.)
And, without meaning to, I had my own little Eat, Pray, Love weekend.
Eat: Ate loads of veggies (since the carnivore in my life was away), some BBQ on a night out with the girls, and an entire box of Sour Patch Kids during the movie (and suffered a slightly numb tongue afterwards).
Pray: Church on Sunday.
Love: Loved having some time to myself this weekend, even though I, of course, missed Husband. To round out my girl weekend, I also watched When Harry Met Sally, saw a couple episodes of Say Yes to the Dress (a show that revolves around wedding dress shopping), and finally got my hair cut.
To summarize, I ate, I prayed, I loved. It was a good weekend.

Even in 2D it was still good

We had a great time at the wedding this weekend, and Husband decided to take a few extra days off from work this week just because. (In my opinion, “just because” is a perfect reason for a few extra days of relaxation.) In fact, I announced this morning that I’m enjoying being at home just as much as on the mini-vacation. Husband took this as a victory, as he will openly admit to his homebody status and I think he is in the process of trying to convert me. We went to see Toy Story 3 today.

We got a laugh because as we were entering the theater, I noticed a sign that said, “This theater offers movies in 2D.”

For a split second I thought, “Wow, 2D!” Then I realized, “Wait a minute…”

I told Husband about the sign and he thought it was hilarious. Maybe that statement was easier to fit on a sign than, “There’s no way you’re going to see any movie here in 3D, so don’t even think about it, you poor saps.”

However, even in “2D,” we loved the movie. I know that some sequels can be a disappointment, but this was just as fresh and funny as the original movies. I’m glad we saw it.

Let the vacation continue.

4-Day Weekend

Lucky for Husband and me, we happen to have the day off today as well, making this a glorious 4-day weekend. And I thought 3-day weekends were great, but 4-day weekends are even better. (I can’t imagine what retirement is like when every week is a 7-day weekend!)
Here are the highlights, so far:
- Driving: We made a quick road trip this weekend. The trip made me understand why people say that “the fun is in the journey and not the destination.” That may be also true because we weren’t visiting someplace like Hawaii, where the fun is the destination. But even still, it was nice for us to get away and have some uninterrupted time together. We shared a lot of laughs along the way. - Watching: I watched the movie My Life in Ruins with the actress from My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I knew it probably wasn’t going to be as funny as My Big Fat Greek Wedding (and I was right), but it was still a light, fun movie. I did fall asleep during the last part of it, but that’s only because I seem to have narcolepsy whenever I watch a movie. Eventually, I did watch the ending, which was cute.
- Reading: I just got my copy of “A Homemade Life” by Molly Wizenberg in the mail. I’ve wanted to read it for a long time, and I finally ordered it last week. I usually don’t recommend a book until I’ve finished it, but so far, I’m quite smitten with it. The book has lots of short stories about her life and the recipes associated with each story. It’s one of the few books that has made me hungry while reading it.
Happy Cinco de Julio! (I guess that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, but hope you have a happy day regardless.)

Couples Retreat

Yesterday we watched the movie Couples Retreat. I was captivated by the movie – not so much by the plot (although it had its funny moments), but by the gorgeous scenery. I would love to take a vacation like that, just without the therapy and awkward yoga. I’m determined that somehow Husband and I will finally take some time off from work and go on a fun vacation together. We’re thinking maybe either this fall or next spring, before we move. After a quick internet search, I figured out that the movie was filmed at the St. Regis Bora Bora Hotel. (Picture from the St. Regis website)

To steal a line from the movie, "This looks like a screensaver!" Although I’m drooling over the pictures, I’m not sure our wallets would feel the same excitement over the (very!) expensive rates.

Have you ever gone to an all-inclusive resort? Is it worth the cost? What’s the best vacation spot you’ve been to (preferably with a beach)? We are open to all ideas! Happy Friday!

A Few Good Movies

I don’t know why it feels like this week has been such a long one. I’ve been looking forward to the weekend so much that I actually went out last night to buy some candy for the movie night that Husband and I are planning to have on Friday.
The Sour Patch Kids are for me, and the Raisinets are for Husband. (Although I’m probably being delusional if I pretend like Husband will get to eat all the Raisinets because I’m sure I will need to taste test a few or half the box.)
We plan to watch the Blind Side. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about this movie that I think we have may have committed some kind of crime by not seeing it yet. I can’t wait to finally see it.
We might also watch A Few Good Men. Husband and I happened to catch part of the movie when it was shown on TV a couple weeks ago, and we’ve become a little infatuated with it. I had almost forgotten what a good movie it is. We rarely buy DVDs, but we actually bought this one recently to watch all the scenes we missed (and to watch a few of the good scenes again). There are so many great quotables from the movie, more than just the obvious, “You can’t handle the truth!” Is it Friday yet?
