I think it was 2006 (or was it 2007?) that I called the Year of the Weddings because we had so many to attend. But, I’m finding that nothing so far compares to 2010. We’re not even halfway through the year yet, and we already have invites to 6 weddings. (Actually, it might be 7; it’s hard to keep them all straight!)
I think we’ll probably be able to make only 2 of the weddings – the ones that are within a drivable distance. The others are all several states away, and sadly, we only have so much time off from work.
I’ve already started thinking about wedding gift ideas. (Or, should I say, the “sorry-we-couldn’t-make-it” consolation prizes, since that applies to most of the weddings.)
For one bride that I know loves
Giada De Laurentiis, I ordered her the new cookbook and I’ll put together a cooking-themed gift.
For a friend of mine from the military, I’m going to give her a pretty cross and either a gift card or something else to go with it.
But, now I’m curious about what other people give as wedding gifts…
What is your favorite gift to give for weddings? Or, if you’re married, what was your favorite gift you received? And more importantly, is it bad if you buy a gift (ahem, say, a nice cookbook) that you secretly want yourself?

I never know what to buy for a wedding gift! Do you know the craziest gift that I love? My large corningware casserole dish that has a heated or cooled carrying case. I use it all the time when I take stuff to work. We have two weddings to attend this year as well.
It's funny, I was thinking about this myself recently. The best thing we got were Walmart/Target giftcards. We got TONS of them. Literally, we didn't have to purchase any groceries out of pocket for the first 3 months or so we were married. And yet I feel tacky trying to give someone else a Walmart giftcard....
Wow. That cookbook themed gift is such a thoughtful gift for a wedding. The best gift we got was a asian style vase filled with gold one dollar coins. 100 of them. The note was 'for every year you will be together.' That was pretty awesome. But the cash/gift cards were greaty appricated, too!
that's hard becasue I never know what to buy and I'm always scared that people will not like it. Luckily, cash is a usual gift in Europe so my best friend who is getting married this year will get cash and a nice painting (I know what kind of art she likes). Arts/paintings is my favorite to-get-gift also but only if people know what I like. I got nine paintings for my wedding and I like only two, others are still in the box. LOL
However, the best gift I ever gave was a pendulum wall clock last year. I could not make it to my cousin's wedding in Chicago so I talked to my aunt and she gave me a good idea of what her son's new apartment will look like so I've decided to find a clock that will match their design - they LOVE it.
Two Good Ideas! I would love a new cookbook!!!
i also called 2006 the year of the wedding!! it was bad, though, because i was 110% single!!! aaaggh. haha. 2007 was also a crazy year for weddings but i was engaged and they were all crammed into a few months rather than spread over the year. i much more enjoyed that season. ;)
FOr my close friends, I have always tried to capture a picture at the wedding of the bride and groom and then I put it in a really nice frame....all of the ones I have done have turned out so beautiful. The other "Creative" gift (thank you Real Simple) was a Happy 1 Year Gift...I put a nice bottle of champagne, 2 plates, 2 forks, a Happy Anniversary card and wrapped it up in a big box with a card explaning that the kit was for them to use on their anniversary when they ate their cake...it was a huge hit....the same friend reciprocated for us and we LOVED it! We have a ton of weddings this year as well!! 2008 was our craziest yet with 16 weddings!!
I usually always buy the glasses off of people's registries.
My favorite gift that we got for the wedding was a framed invite! Now I try to do the same if I can.
Pyrex anything!!! So practical. So handy.
